MAE Awarded NAVAIR Contract for V-22 Gearbox Test Stand

Mustang Advanced Engineering (MAE), the company that also offers Mustang Dynamometers, has received a firm-fixed-price contract from Naval Air (NAVAIR) Systems Command, Commander Fleet Readiness Center in Patuxent River, Maryland, for a test stand capable of testing both left-hand and right-hand V-22 PropRotor Gearbox (PRGB) Input Quill Assemblies (IQA) for the V-22 Osprey aircraft. This includes all mechanical, electrical, software and control systems, as well as ancillary subsystems required to test either PRGB IQA. Work will be performed in Twinsburg, Ohio, and Cherry Point, North Carolina.

The MAE unique test stand design uses the 4-square principle to apply large torques across the IQAs in either a static or dynamic state. The torque is applied by winding up the connected shaft torque between two parallel gearboxes with equal ratios. The test stand can apply high horsepower across the IQAs at very high speeds, or revolutions per minute, which will exceed the in-flight operating conditions.

The test stand is configured with MAE’s TESTCell software, which is a mature, highly versatile software package that is used to control, display and acquire data for transmission and powertrain test stands. This versatile software package consists of many configurable modules, which gives the customer full control and monitoring of their test stand.

MAE’s Proven Track Record

MAE said that its tightly integrated design utilizing commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components and its highly experienced engineering and project management staff (over 250-man years of experience combined) provided NAVAIR confidence in MAE’s capability of meeting the required critical time frame constraints.

“MAE has successfully installed multiple military grade transmission and gearbox test stands for the government which have been performing flawlessly,” said Eser Manav, VP operations. “MAE’s proven track record and tightly integrated solutions provide the government significant advantages which resulted in the award. The entire MAE team is grateful for another opportunity to serve our nation’s Warfighters.”
