Water Damage Forces Hyundai, Genesis Recalls

Vehicles Affected: Hyundai’s latest recall is out for a fire risk that affects nearly 91,000 cars. Aside from model-year 2015-16 Hyundai Genesis sedans, affected Genesis-brand sedans include model-year 2017-19 G80s and G90s and model-year 2019 G70s.

The Problem: The fire risk stems from water damage. Water may enter the starter solenoid and cause an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.

The Fix: Dealers will install a remedy relay kit in the engine junction box for free. Until they do, owners are advised to park outside and away from structures. Owners will be notified April 13.

Jeep Grand Cherokee, Wrangler 4xe Models Recalled for Windshield Defrosters

Vehicles Affected: Jeep parent automaker Stellantis is recalling more than 199,000 examples of the brand’s Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid SUVs for software issues that could disable the windshield defrost system. Affected vehicles include model-year 2021-24 Wrangler 4xes and model-year 2022-24 Grand Cherokee 4xes.

The Problem: Some vehicles may have been built with incorrectly programmed hybrid control processor software, which could disable the windshield defrost system under certain conditions.

The Fix: Dealers will update the affected hybrid control processor software for free. Stellantis will notify owners April 5.

Over 77,500 Expeditions, Navigators Recalled for Seat Belts

Vehicles Affected: Ford is recalling  more than 77,500 of its Expedition SUVs, as well as the equivalent Navigator SUV from its Lincoln luxury sub-brand, for defective seat belt pre-tensioners in the front seats. Affected vehicles include model-year 2018-20 Expeditions and Navigators.

The Problem: A seat belt pre-tensioner tightens slack in the seat belt in the case of a crash, reducing how much an occupant is thrown forward. In the affected vehicles, the pre-tensioners may inadvertently deploy and lock the seat belt, preventing it from retracting or extending; this can result in injury during the event of a crash. As a warning of the defect, the automaker says the airbag malfunction light will illuminate on the instrument cluster before the inadvertent deployment.

The Fix: Dealers will inspect the seat belt retractors and replace them, as necessary. Additionally, dealers will inspect for a climate-control drain-tube elbow and install it if one is not present. Both repairs will be done for free. Owners will be notified March 4; a second notice likely will be sent in the second half of 2024, when remedy parts are expected to be available.

VWs, Audis Recalled Over FWD Fuel Leak Fire Risk

A Volkswagen recall affects more than 261,200 vehicles across both its lineup and that of its Audi luxury arm. The issue concerns a fuel leak that could lead to a fire. Affected vehicles include front-wheel drive examples of model-year 2015-20 Audi A3 sedans and VW Golf and Golf GTI hatchbacks; model-year 2015-19 VW Golf SportWagen wagons; and model-year 2019-20 VW Jetta sedans.

The Problem: Due to a problem with a suction jet pump seal inside the fuel tank, fuel may flow into the evaporative emissions system and possibly leak out of the charcoal canister. Such a leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

The Fix: Dealers will replace the suction pump for free to resolve the issue. Audi and VW will begin notifying owners April 12

Toyota, Lexus Vehicles Recalled for Transmission Issue

Vehicles Affected: Toyota is recalling some 280,000 examples of its Tundra pickup truck and Sequoia SUV, as well as the LX 600 SUV from its luxury brand Lexus, for a transmission issue that allows affected vehicles to roll inadvertently. Affected vehicles include model-year 2022-24 Toyota Tundras and Lexus LX 600s, and model-year 2023-24 Sequoias.

The Problem: Parts of the transmission may not immediately disengage when the vehicle is shifted to Neutral. When the brakes are not applied, engine power can still transfer to the wheels, allowing the vehicle to creep at a low speed on flat surfaces and increasing the risk of a crash.

The Fix: Dealers will update the transmission software for free. Owners will be notified by late April.

338,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees Recalled for Defective Suspension

Affected Vehicles: Jeep parent automaker Stellantis is recalling more than 338,000 of its standard two-row Jeep Grand Cherokee and three-row Grand Cherokee L SUVs over defective suspension components. Affected vehicles include model-year 2021-23 Grand Cherokee Ls and model-year 2022-23 Grand Cherokees.

The Problem: The issue is over damaged pinch bolts in the suspension’s upper control arms, which can result in a loss of clamp load between the upper control arm ball joint and the steering knuckle. This can cause the wheel to fall outward, resulting in an unexpected loss of control. Stellantis says drivers may notice a strange noise when driving over bumps as an indicator of the defect.

The Fix: Dealers will replace the upper control arm pinch bolts for free. Stellantis will notify vehicle owners April 12.

381,000 Toyota Tacomas Recalled for Defective Rear Axle

Vehicles Affected: Toyota is recalling nearly 381,000 of its mid-size Tacoma pickup trucks over an issue with the vehicle’s rear axle. Affected vehicles include model-year 2022-23 Tacomas.

The Problem: The trouble concerns residual welding debris from manufacturing on the ends of the rear axle assembly that can loosen retaining nuts over time to the point of separation. This could cause a part to separate from the axle, which affects vehicle stability and brake performance.

The Fix: Dealers will inspect the rear axle assembly and tighten the axle retaining nuts; damaged parts of the rear axle also will be repaired or replaced, as necessary. Both repairs will be done for free. Owners will be notified by late April.

Chevrolet, GMC Trucks Recalled Over Unexpected Braking

Vehicles Affected: Chevrolet and GMC parent automaker GM’s latest recall affects more than 55,700 of the respective brands’ Colorado and Canyon pickup trucks. The issue involves the trucks’ front camera module system, which may falsely identify objects or obstacles. Affected vehicles include model-year 2023 Colorados and Canyons.

The Problem: The front camera module system may unnecessarily prompt the automatic emergency braking system over falsely detected obstacles. Such braking can cause the vehicle to slow down or stop without notice.

The Fix: Dealers will update the front camera module software for free. GM will notify owners April 8.

The Problem: The issue is with the left turbocharger oil pipe and hose assembly, which may deteriorate from excess heat and leak oil.

The Problem: Exposure to high temperatures from engine components can cause the left turbocharger oil feed pipe to crack and leak oil into the exhaust manifold, increasing the risk of an engine fire. Warning signs of the issue include white smoke, a burning smell or oil leakage. This recall replaces a previous one from 2019 for some 8,000 model-year 2018 G80s and model-year 2017-18 G90s that also increased the risk of an engine fire. Vehicles repaired under the previous recall will need this updated remedy.

The Fix: Dealers will replace the left turbocharger oil feed pipe for free. Hyundai will notify owners May 7.
