IIHS Study Questions Autonomous Driver Assist Systems

A new report from Autoweek states that the IIHS is looking into autonomous and automated driver assist systems. The recent study confirmed that autonomous systems like adaptive cruise control do not offer measurable safety features beyond existing technologies like Automatic Emergency Braking.
The study looked into both BMW and Nissan models from 2017 to 2019 to develop the study and look at collision claim rates between differing trim levels: some offered autonomous systems while others did not.
The IIHS found that brands often saw a reduction in the rate of property damage claims between the base models and the autonomous-equipped vehicles, but actual collision claims between these models did not show statistically significant differences.
The IIHS noted “the technology (partial autonomous systems) can encourage a false sense of security and induce boredom, causing drivers to tune out.”
