City Truck Equipment Launches as Standalone Upfitting Brand

City Rent a Truck announced the launch of its sister company, City Truck Equipment, a full-service upfitting brand providing high-quality, job-ready truck builds.

City Truck Equipment began as an internal solution to overcome delays, backlogs and quality challenges with external upfitters, company officials stated in a press release. By bringing work in-house, City Rent a Truck says that it improved efficiency, quality control and turnaround times—and soon recognized its customers were facing the same struggles.

“Relying on outside upfitters meant we couldn’t get our customers what they needed within the timelines they expected,” said Jeff Schuetz, president & CEO. “No one will ever care for your customers the way you do. When ‘Customer First’ is your defining core value, every decision has to focus on improving their experience.”

From Internal Solution to Industry Provider

What began as a small in-house operation has evolved into one of the nation’s fastest-growing upfitters, noted the release. Over the past five years, City Truck Equipment claims that its builds have proven themselves in one of the harshest environments possible: rental.

“We’ve spent the last five years upfitting our own rental fleet and watching those trucks perform in the field on some of the toughest jobs imaginable,” said Shaefer Schuetz, vice president of business development. “After perfecting the craft on our own fleet, we’re ready to put a bow on it and offer this service to our customers as well.”

City Truck Equipment operates from its brand-new headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri, with additional facilities in Olathe, Kansas; Houston, Texas; Atlanta, Georgia; and St. Louis, Missouri.

“Over time, we’ve mastered nearly every truck configuration imaginable,” added James McKinley, vice president of operations. “Our diverse rental fleet pushed us to become experts in builds ranging from service bodies to tri-axle dumps and everything in between.”

City Truck Equipment’s capabilities include mechanic body crane trucks, flatbeds, reel transport beds, framer bodies, contractor bodies, van storage systems and more—all supported by in-house engineering, fabrication, electrical and hydraulic teams, the company said. Both companies will also operate under the same leadership team.
