Meguiar’s Brings 2 Sonderwerks Porsche 911 Restorations to Luftgekühlt 12
Car care brand returns to the Luftgekühlt series with a pair of restored, performance-upgraded 911s from a North Carolina restoration shop…
Meguiar’s continues its six-year partnership with the Luftgekühlt event series by traveling to Atlanta for Luft 12, which takes place on Oct. 10 in the Town at Trilith, a short distance from downtown Atlanta, company officials announced in a press release.
In addition to having its latest products on view and car care experts available to answer questions, Meguiar’s will feature a pair of 911 models from Porsche restoration specialist Sonderwerks. The two custom Porsches will be housed at the Meguiar’s display space, located by the Town Stage next to the Shipyard.
Inside the Sonderwerks Porsche 911 Restorations
Based in Cornelius, North Carolina, Sonderwerks is a dedicated 15,000-square-foot facility offering repair, restoration and performance services, with its engine, transmission, paint, body and upholstery shops located under one roof, the release noted.
The two examples of its work that will be on display with Meguiar’s at Luft 12 include a Fashion Grey 1991 Type 964 Porsche 911, which received a two-year, no-expense-spared, nut-and-bolt restoration. Highlights include a 3.9-liter engine, which was dyno-tested at 375 horsepower. The transmission uses a shorter ring and pinion for superior acceleration, plus a Wavetrac limited-slip differential for cornering prowess.
The exterior was backdated to resemble a 1973 911 RSR and includes a carbon-fiber splitter and hand-laid roof panel. The stance was enhanced with 17-inch Braid BZ wheels while the interior features seats sourced from GTS Classics, which were trimmed in Bordeaux red, black and woven carbon leather.
The list of vendors involved in the project includes Kinsler Fuel Injection, Link Engine Management, Öhlins, Brembo, Elephant Racing, Tarett Engineering, BBI Performance Shocks, Pauter Machine Co. and many others.

The Fashion Grey 964 will be contrasted by a 1977 911 Coupe finished in Porsche Magenta (Karminrot) by Sonderwerks, a color available from 1974-77 and specified by the owner to replace its original black paint.
Once again, performance was top of the wish list, so the car received a Big Port 3.0-liter engine with 9.8:1 pistons/cylinders and 964 camshafts. The power upgrades were balanced by Bilstein B8 dampers, Elephant Racing torsion bars and Eibach sway bars.
The appearance has been updated with RUF-style front and rear bumpers and a Vintage 911 RS-style ducktail. The interior features Recaro Pole Position seats upholstered in Pasha cloth and black leather.
