GM Sued by the State of Texas Over Driver’s Data

A new report from Road & Track notes that the state of Texas is suing General Motors over its driver data collection practices after recent news that manufacturers reportedly have been sharing private data with insurance companies.

The filing from the Texas Attorney General charges that GM deceptively collected data including late-night driving, driver and passenger seatbelt status, hard braking, sharp turns, and driving over 80 mph. These numbers were then said to be used to determine a driver score, which was then made accessible to insurance companies.

The report also alleges that GM incentivized dealers to collect the data, or turn off certain safety services for customers who did not opt-in.
