Desert Power Wagons Reimagines a 1953 Classic Dodge Workhorse

Born as a 1953 Dodge Power Wagon with an inline-six engine, four-wheel drive, and heavy-duty construction, the latest bespoke build from Desert Power Wagons is now powered by a 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel inline-six and comprehensively reengineered from the chassis up. The Desert Power Wagon build carries the unmistakable presence of Dodge’s post-war workhorse into an entirely different century, company officials stated in a press release.

Reengineering an American Workhorse

The classic Power Wagon’s upright grille, broad front fenders, narrow cab, exposed running boards, split windshield and functional proportions came from an era when trucks were designed around the work they were expected to perform. That honesty remains at the center of this build, notes the release.

The vintage body architecture was extensively rebuilt and refined by Tisdale Coachworks before being finished in BMW C64 Frozen Deep Grey and paired with a thoroughly reworked chassis, which was stripped, sandblasted, refinished and powder-coated as part of the build process.

Desert Power Wagon’s goal was to preserve what made the Power Wagon recognizable while giving the structure, drivetrain, suspension, braking, electrical systems, comfort and drivability the benefit of modern engineering. It looks like a Power Wagon that simply never stopped evolving, the company says.

From Flathead Six to Cummins Six

The original Power Wagon formula centered around a rugged flathead inline-six. Now at the heart of the build is a 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel inline-six, supported by extensively updated fuel, cooling, intake, exhaust, electrical and engine-management systems. A custom turbo-back exhaust gives the Cummins room to breathe, while custom front and rear driveshafts route power from the transfer case to the front and rear axles.

One element deliberately kept mechanical is a manually shifted transfer case; when four-wheel drive is needed, the driver selects it.

Built From the Chassis Up

A Power Wagon should look capable, but more importantly, it should be capable, the company says. This build rides on a comprehensively upgraded suspension featuring FOX remote-reservoir coil-over shocks paired with Eibach coil springs, giving the truck the stance and control required by its significantly larger rolling stock.

The 20-inch Black Rhino Armory wheels wrapped in 40×14.50R20LT tires transform the Power Wagon’s already commanding proportions without losing the visual honesty of the original design. To make it easier to climb into a truck on 40-inch tires, AMP Research PowerStep running boards provide modern convenience without interrupting the classic body lines when retracted.

Power-assisted steering, upgraded braking hardware, stainless braided brake lines, revised steering components, modern dampers and an electric parking-brake system further bring the underlying mechanical package into the present day. And a WARN VR EVO 12-S 12,000-pound winch at the front provides recovery capability.

Classic Character With Modern Command Center

Where the exterior remains vintage, the cabin has been rebuilt around modern comfort, usability and craftsmanship. Extensive Buffalo Tan leather gives the interior the warmth and character expected in a hand-built vehicle, complemented by custom upholstery work, sound insulation, finished interior panels and carefully integrated modern controls.

A Dakota Digital VHX instrumentation system replaces the limitations of period gauges while retaining an appropriately analog visual character. Climate control comes courtesy of a Vintage Air Gen-V system, while power windows, contemporary switchgear, upgraded interior lighting, USB charging, and modern electrical architecture make the truck far more practical than when it was conceived in the early 1950s.

An American Autowire Highway 22 Plus harness serves as the backbone of the modernized electrical system.

The steering system has also been reconsidered, incorporating an upgraded tilt steering column and contemporary steering components while maintaining the straightforward driver-focused feel that belongs in a Power Wagon.
