Tesla Autopilot Investigation Reveals Over-Reliance on Cameras

Where many brands use both lidar & video footage for self-driving, Autopilot doesn't use lidar...

A new investigation from The Wall Street Journal reveals that Tesla models may get into accidents on autopilot due to the tech heavily relying on cameras, according to Car & Driver.

The investigation looked into why Tesla’s autopilot system is getting into crashes. The 11-minute video points to an over-reliance on camera and video feeds to determine if roadways are safe. Many other manufacturers utilize a combo of lidar data alongside camera systems to navigate, while Tesla is one of the few manufacturers that relies on only the camera systems.

Of the 222 crashes the WSJ was able to investigate, 44 crashes were caused by a Tesla suddenly veering out of the lane, while another 31 crashes could be attributed to Autopilot’s failure to recognize an obstacle.
