Slate’s Modular Truck Aims to Be America’s Most Affordable Pickup

Slate's direct-to-consumer truck starts at $24,950 & offers over 200 accessories that can be added over time to customize the vehicle to an owner's needs...

The Slate truck is a modular platform for customization, starting with fewer than half the parts of a typical truck. With tactile controls and no touchscreen, the Slate is built for hardworking people looking for a vehicle that will adapt to their changing needs without breaking the bank, company officials stated in a press release.

“More than 180,000 reservation holders have told us they’re ready for a vehicle that’s affordable, reliable and built around their lives,” said Slate CEO Peter Faricy. “Slate gives customers the freedom to buy only what they need today and personalize their vehicle as their needs change tomorrow. We’re excited to start seeing Slates on roads across America later this year.”

The Slate starts at $24,950 and sells direct to consumer. It can be ordered as a pickup or as an SUV, or it can be converted after purchase. The company offers two SUVs, the Squareback and Fastback, starting at $29,950.

The Slate has an increased range of 37% for an estimated range of 205 miles. It also has an increased tow rating of up to 2,000 pounds, and the payload capacity has risen to 1,550 pounds.

Accessories & Customization

There are over 200 accessories available on the Slate Marketplace, with over 80% under $500—including roof racks, stereos, zip-off seat covers and light covers. Over 100 wrap colors were available at launch, as well as custom colors. Full vehicle wraps cost under $500.

The company says the Slate was engineered from the ground up to be America’s least expensive vehicles to purchase, insure and service. Owners can do most repairs themselves using Slate U as their guide, and the truck is covered by a 10-year/110,000-mile battery and powertrain warranty. Owners can also access a network of 3,000-plus RepairPal shops around the country, including over 100 service centers that can perform high-voltage EV service.

Availability

Slates can be preordered on Slate.auto for $300. For existing reservation holders who have paid $50, the preorder cost is only $250. First deliveries are expected in Q4 2026. Ahead of a customer’s delivery date, they will be able to personalize and purchase their Slate.

Slates are designed to achieve the highest safety ratings and will be assembled at a reindustrialized factory in Warsaw, Indiana, noted the release. The company plans to invest nearly $400 million into the factory, create 2000-plus jobs in Warsaw and contribute up to $39 billion to Indiana’s economy over 20 years.
