Work Truck Solutions: Q2 Data Signals Shift in Fleet Turnover & Market Velocity
New work truck inventory has stabilized while used units see rising mileage & faster turnover, according to a new Work Truck Solutions report…
Work Truck Solutions, a commercial vehicle authority, has released its Q2 2026 Commercial Vehicle Market Analysis. The Q2 data in the report presents strong positive signals that the tight-supply friction of previous quarters is beginning to yield. Driven by a significant rotation of higher-mileage fleet trade-ins, the preowned commercial market is seeing renewed transaction velocity, with buyers rapidly absorbing these vehicles and driving Days to Turn (DTT) down, company officials stated in a press release.
New Work Truck & Van Market
Here are some key highlights from the report concerning new work trucks in the market:
- The average price for new work trucks remained stable, rising just 0.7% quarter over quarter (QoQ), while dipping slightly by 0.3% year over year (YoY) to $59,635.
- Availability plateaued as average on-lot inventory per dealer held flat with no change QoQ, although there was a 20.7% contraction when measured from Q2 2025.
- Sales (movement) per dealer rebounded, increasing 8.7% QoQ, though this remains 7.4% lower YoY.
- Days to Turn (DTT) improved significantly to 172 days, representing an 8.5% QoQ decrease and a 14.9% decline YoY.
With new inventory volumes holding steady, robust commercial vehicle buyer demand is manifesting as faster inventory turn times. Business owners are moving to secure available new vehicles, resulting in a more positive sales outlook for commercial vehicle dealers.
Used Work Truck & Van Market
Here are some key highlights from the report concerning used work trucks in the market:
- The average price for used commercial vehicles dropped 3.1% QoQ to $37,494, though prices remain 8.8% higher YoY.
- On-lot inventory per dealer rose, up 7.4% QoQ and 3.6% YoY.
- Sales (movement) grew 10.0% QoQ, narrowing the YoY figure to a decline of 8.3%.
- Days to Turn (DTT) dropped to 56 days, reflecting a 9.7% QoQ improvement, despite being 5.7% higher than last year.
- Median mileage jumped dramatically, surging 30.8% QoQ and 24.5% YoY to an average of 77,507 miles.
The large spike in average mileage suggests that fleet managers have been driving their work trucks and vans longer before introducing them to the secondary market, according to the report. Despite higher mileage, these used commercial vehicles are turning over 10% faster than last quarter, indicating that buyers are still actively absorbing used stock to keep operations running.
New Commercial BEV Market Insights
New battery electric (BEV) work trucks experienced an average price drop of 5.9% QoQ, coming in at $54,141. However, average prices are still up a substantial 54.5% YoY. This dramatic annual price change may indicate a commercial BEV landscape transitioning toward a more premium product mix, Work Truck Solutions said.
Industry Perspective
“While retail sales have been down in the first half of the year due to higher prices and escalated interest rates, the work truck and van market has been a positive offset for dealers, particularly in the second quarter, providing sales growth, better inventory turn times and much better grosses,” said Aaron Johnson, CEO of Work Truck Solutions. “New work truck inventory has stabilized, sales are up and days to turn has seen solid improvement, demonstrating strong operational demand.
“Meanwhile, data from the used commercial vehicle market is revealing numerous factors that point toward fleet managers cycling at a slower pace. Dealers who leverage precise digital merchandising to showcase the value of these highly capable, yet higher-mileage vehicles will find a very receptive buyer base.”
Segment Highlight: Duty Classes
Earlier in 2026, Work Truck Solutions introduced a rotating quarterly segment spotlight to provide deeper visibility into unique, specific commercial vehicle segments. For Q1, the focus was on Commercial Vans. For Q2, the focus shifts to Duty Classes, specifically analyzing the performance of Light-Duty (Class 1-3), Medium-Duty (Class 4-6), and Heavy-Duty (Class 7-8) work trucks and vans. This quarter’s segment revealed several noteworthy shifts in pricing, inventory and buyer behavior.
Light-Duty Work Trucks
Light-duty work trucks showed robust growth in sales (movement) and faster turn times, highlighting strong commercial demand.
New Light-Duty Work Trucks:
- Prices rose 1.5% both QoQ and YoY, to $52,256.
- On-lot inventory was up 3.1% QoQ and 1.8% YoY.
- Sales (movement) increased sharply, up 31.2% QoQ, and jumped YoY by 50.2%.
- DTT dropped QoQ by 4.5%, and YoY by 1.9%, to 141.7 days.
Used Light-Duty Work Trucks:
- Prices rose 2.4% QoQ and YoY 0.7%, up to $30,437.
- On-lot inventory increased by 6.1% QoQ and 2.9% YoY.
- Sales (movement) grew steadily, continuing an annual surge.
- DTT dropped by 3.1% QoQ but rose YoY 8.9% up to 74.9 days.
The Q2 data underscores the light-duty segment as a primary driver of overall market activity. Robust transactional gains of over 31% QoQ in new light-duty trucks, paired with declining DTT, signal that business owners are aggressively adding light-duty vehicles to their fleets. Pricing remains remarkably stable across both new and used categories, indicating healthy supply absorption and resilient B2B demand, the company said.
Medium-Duty Work Trucks
New medium-duty work trucks delivered strong metrics, marked by rising sales momentum and improving DTT despite softer availability. In the preowned segment, overall demand remained solid, with buyers continuing to find price relief in the used market, where average prices dropped nearly 4% compared to Q2 2025. Work Truck Solutions says this presents a compelling cost-effective option for fleet managers when comparing the average preowned price of $41,288 against the average new medium-duty truck price of $69,815.
New Medium-Duty Work Trucks:
- Prices rose 1.3% QoQ and 2% YoY to $69,815.
- On-lot inventory was down both QoQ and YoY by 0.4% and 14.1%, respectively.
- Sales (movement) rose both QoQ and YoY, 16.9% and 26.9%, respectively.
- DTT dropped by 6.9% QoQ and 12.0% YoY, down to 213.5 days.
Used Medium-Duty Work Trucks:
- Prices dropped only 0.9% QoQ and decreased by 3.9% YoY to $41,288.
- On-lot inventory was up 2.2% QoQ, but down by 2.1% YoY.
- Sales (movement) had fluctuations between QoQ and YoY data, with numbers ultimately up YoY.
- DTT rose QoQ by 14.1% but dropped by 17.3% YoY to 95.6 days.
Heavy-Duty Work Trucks
Heavy-duty work trucks, including class 7—box trucks, field service trucks, etc.—and class 8—day cabs, dump trucks, etc.— experienced softer pricing and rising turn times.
New Heavy-Duty Work Trucks:
- Prices decreased 3.0% QoQ but fell 12.5% YoY.
- On-lot inventory changed marginally QoQ, but fell by 12.5% YoY.
- Sales (movement) grew 39.9% QoQ and rose 6.7% YoY.
- DTT fluctuated both QoQ and YoY, with nuances by class and truck type.
Used Heavy-Duty Work Trucks:
- Prices fell slightly by 0.6% QoQ and dropped YoY by 18.1%.
- On-lot inventory showed quarterly challenges, while still being up YoY.
- Sales (movement) continued a steady positive path, keeping overall secondary market activity well ahead of prior-year volumes.
- DTT rose 19.0% QoQ and 60.9% YoY to a more historical average of 90.1 days.
With many nuances in the HD segment, Work Truck Solutions says it’s important to note that this dataset includes multiple subsets averaged within the segment and doesn’t necessarily reflect the individual dynamics of each subset.
