Putting the ‘Horse’ Back into ‘Horseless Carriage’

In the early days of the car, motor vehicles had to share the road with the preeminent mode of transportation of the day—the horse-drawn carriage—and it wasn’t exactly a seamless transition.

Cars often spooked oncoming horses, frequently leading to crashes and injuries. In order to help horses adjust to their horseless counterparts, a few inventors came up with some zany ideas, including strapping a wooden horse head to the front of the vehicle.
