U.S. lawmakers have proposed a ban on Chinese and Russian vehicle software, according to a new report from Car & Driver. The regulations could be enacted as early as 2027.
Due to concerns over data collection, the U.S. Department of Commerce has proposed the new rule that would ban internet-connected software systems by 2027 for vehicles and by 2030 for autonomous driving software. The ban would prohibit importing or selling Chinese or Russian-backed systems that utilized Bluetooth, cellular, satellite or Wi-Fi signals.
The report notes it is unclear how this would affect brands like Volvo, which is owned by Geely Holding, a Chinese conglomerate. Members of the Department of Commerce noted the need to secure Americans from potential surveillance and limit the ability to immobilize vehicles.
