Ford Invests $4 Million in Automotive Technician Scholarships

Ford's Auto Tech Scholarship program designed to combat nationwide shortage of skilled technicians that continues to rise…

Ford is continuing to address the critical nationwide shortage of automotive technicians with another significant investment of $4 million in its Auto Tech Scholarship programThis is in addition to a $1 million investment in 2023 and a $2 million investment in 2024.

As vehicles become increasingly complex, the demand for skilled technicians is skyrocketing. By 2028, an estimated 471,000 automotive technicians will be needed. This shortage leaves approximately three open positions for every graduating technician, creating a significant gap in the industry.

To combat this, Ford Dealers and Ford Philanthropy are expanding their scholarship program to provide 800 students with $5,000 scholarships each, a substantial increase from 200 scholarships in 2023. This investment underscores Ford’s commitment to training the next generation of automotive service professionals and ensuring that dealerships are equipped to service the increasingly sophisticated vehicles on the road. The program aims to help fill the gap of technician positions.

Makenna Enga’s Story

Makenna Enga demonstrates how scholarships and a love for hands-on work can fuel success in male-dominated fields. Initially planning for college soccer, Makenna discovered her passion for auto mechanics. Lacking a family background in the field, she gained experience through self-study and projects. To advance her skills, she enrolled in an auto tech program, but the cost presented a challenge.

A Ford scholarship made her education possible, equipping her with the essential skills she needed. Now a technician, Makenna is committed to service, customer education and dispelling industry misconceptions. Her ultimate goal is Formula One racing.

The scholarship application process will be open through the end of September, with eligible students selected from across the country.
