A report from Yahoo News notes that dirt track legend Scott Bloomquist passed away in a single-engine plane accident. Bloomquist was 60 years old.
During his lengthy racing career, Bloomquist had over 600 victories, eight Dirt Late Model Dreams and nine National Championships in the Late Model series going back to the mid 1990s. Bloomquist was inducted to the Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame in 2002.
The accident occurred on the Bloomquist family farm in Mooresburg, Tennessee, on Aug. 16, around 8 a.m. local time. The FAA confirmed there was just a single pilot aboard. The aircraft was a vintage Piper J3C-65 Cub, which was originally used by the U.S. military in WWII.
Many racers have left their condolences on social media, including Tony Stewart who noted Bloomquist’s ingenuity on the track and others stating he was the “smartest dirt track racer of all time.”
