Converting the Corvette C8.R for IMSA GTD Racing

A switch from the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s now-defunct GT Le Mans class to the new GTD Pro class required major changes to the factory-backed Corvette C8.Rs competing in the series this year.

Instead of building a brand-new car that conformed to the GT3-based regulations, Corvette Racing opted to instead adapt its GTLM car to the GTD specifications, requiring a full overhaul of last year’s championship-winning car.

In a recent interview with IMSA’s Technical Director Matt Kurdock, Racer.com got an in-depth look at the process behind adapting the car for the new technical requirements, which required changes to the C8.R’s aerodynamics, powertrain and more.
