API Extends ILSAC GF-7 Transition Period to 18 Months

The extension will give oil marketers more time to adjust product lines & packaging & help balance industry needs with consumer expectations…

API has released the following statement regarding the transition period from ILSAC GF-6 to ILSAC GF-7:

The American Petroleum Institute (API) has extended the overlap period between the ILSAC GF-6 and the new ILSAC GF-7 engine oil standards to October 1, 2026, in response to industry requests. This creates an 18-month overlap period instead of the customary one year, providing oil marketers additional time to transition to the latest specification.

The overlap period, part of the Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System (EOLCS), is intended to provide oil marketers a fair transition by giving them time to adjust product lines and packaging without penalizing early adopters. The 18-month overlap period will help balance industry needs with consumer expectations, ensuring continued confidence in certified products while allowing more flexibility during the transition.

ILSAC GF-7 is the latest passenger car engine oil standard, delivering enhanced fuel efficiency, emissions control, engine cleanliness and wear protection to meet the needs of modern vehicles. It sets a new industry benchmark for performance while ensuring compatibility with evolving engine technologies.
