Florida-based Superformance and Safir Engineering will host the public unveiling of a one-off car, Chassis GT40P-1150, during the GT40 Reunion July 26-28 at the Pittsburgh Grand Prix in Wampum, Pennsylvania.
Built in the likeness of one of the first GT40s (GT-104), which was a prototype raced extensively by Shelby American, the car is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the GT40 and the 40th anniversary of Safir owning the GT40 Trademark, according to a press release.
“The GT40 Reunion at Pittsburgh International Race Complex will be the greatest gathering of this iconic sports car in the last twenty years,” said Lance Stander, CEO of Superformance. “The Superformance / Safir display at the historic races offers the perfect backdrop to introduce our very special car to the public. The rare GT40 is literally a time machine, offering the opportunity to buy a ‘brand new’ 1964 model from the factory. It is destined to be the crown jewel of a very fortunate individual’s collection.”
GT40s dominated sports car endurance racing during the 1960s. With victories at races including Sebring, Daytona and Le Mans, the GT40 earned a reputation as one of the all-time great sports cars. But only a handful of authentic GT40s have been built over the past sixty years.
“Every decade or so, one of the low serial number cars is built, giving collectors an unbelievable opportunity to own an incredibly rare car,” said John Sadler, one of the Safir partners. “GT40P-1150 is the lowest serial number now available and celebrates the forty-year ownership of the GT40 Trademark by the Safir GT40 Spares Company. It also is a salute to GT-104, which Shelby American turned into a contender with Ken Miles, Bob Bondurant, Bruce McLaren and Richie Ginther racing it worldwide.”
The GT40P-1150 was manufactured under the scrutiny of Safir GT40 Spares, Ltd., at the Superformance factory in South Africa. The car is powered by a Weber carbureted small block Ford engine with silver ceramic headers that crank out over 400 HP.
“The car is a showstopper that will really standout at the Reunion,” said Stander. “The sports car is painted a stunning American Racing Blue with ‘Safir GT40’ side stripes. It has the early double nostril air intakes and right hand drive with right hand gear shift, just like GT-104. To make it streetable, the Mark I GT40 boasts a leather interior, sound insulation, air conditioning, painted door eyebrows, twin rear body clamps, 15-inch 6 spoke BRM Wheels, round fog lamps and reverse gear illumination.”
The Reunion will welcome all Ford GT variants, from the original Ford GT40 race cars to the reborn 2005-2006 Ford GT and third generation (2017-2024) Ford GT, including the MkII.
Superformance LLC builds the only authorized GT40 under license from SAFIR GT40 Spares Ltd, who holds the GT40 trademarks and licensing rights. Together, they have kept the legend alive and available for enthusiasts to drive and enjoy.
Safir issued the official MSO and the GT40 wears a Safir serial number plate. The sports car GT40P-1150 will be added to the GT40 Registry and comes with a GT40 Certificate of Authenticity. This “One Off” street legal GT40 is available through Superformance or Safir.
