RM Sotheby’s Announces Auction During the Las Vegas Grand Prix

RM Sotheby’s returns to Las Vegas for Grand Prix Race Week, partnering with amfAR and Wynn Las Vegas to present an auction, headlined by the last-ever Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing.

The exclusive event will take place during amfAR’s inaugural Las Vegas benefit on Nov. 22 and will be hosted by television personality, comedian and writer Jay Leno, feature Sylvester and Jennifer Stallone, and include an intimate performance by Diana Ross.

Building on the success of last year’s record-breaking auction with Wynn Las Vegas—where Sir Lewis Hamilton’s race-winning Silver Arrow became the most valuable modern Formula 1 car ever sold at $18.8 million—this year’s collection brings another rare lineup, led by the very last Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing.

The Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing is widely regarded as one of the most recognizable cars ever made. The last Gullwing offers a singular, storied opportunity for a collector to own the very last example of one of Mercedes-Benz’s most coveted models ever produced. Chassis no. 7500079, represents the ultimate in collecting, to possess the “last” of anything that defined an era is to hold a piece of history itself, the company noted.

As the last 300 SL Gullwing ever built, this car was crafted as a special-order “Standwagen” for display at the 1957 Poznan International Trade Fair, retaining its original Fire Engine Red finish over Crème leather along with all numbers-matching components, from chassis to gearbox. Treasured by just four owners since new, including over 25 years with its current custodian, this car extends a once-in-a-lifetime chance to claim a symbol of automotive history and prestige that can never be replicated. The Last Gullwing is more than a car; it’s the culmination of an era, carrying with it a legacy that endows its owner with a truly unique place in the story of Mercedes-Benz. (Estimate: USD $2,500,000 – $3,500,000)
