Motor 1 has revealed news that Porsche has submitted patents for a six-stroke engine design. The added strokes would occur between the typical power and exhaust strokes.
The newly released design utilizes a unique crankshaft design which would create two top dead center positions and two bottom dead center positions within each cylinder. This would in effect change compression twice during the rotation process and in effect create more power and a more thorough burn of the engine fuel.
While the design is much more complex than typical four-stroke designs it points to the manufacturer’s willingness to further develop internal combustion engines as other brand continue to push for electrification.
