Nick Mason’s Pink Floyd VW Golf to Be Auctioned for Charity

Mason’s VW will headline two special charity lots at Iconic Auctioneers’ NEC Classic Motor Show sale…

Iconic Auctioneers will present two special charity lots at its NEC Classic Motor Show auction at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, UK. One of the lots will feature a unique Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet Mk III Pink Floyd Edition offered directly from Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason CBE. Joining it is a restored 1961 Volkswagen Double Door Deluxe, donated without reserve to benefit Great Ormond Street Hospital and Charity, and a Red Bull RB8 rear wing end plate from Sebastian Vettel’s 2012 Formula 1 season, supporting Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). The sale takes place across the weekend of Nov. 8-9, with proceeds from the Mason entry going to the Harefield Healing Garden charity.

Volkswagen’s collaboration with Pink Floyd in the mid-1990s created one of the most distinctive special editions of the decade—the Golf Cabriolet Pink Floyd Edition, according to auction officials in a press release. This model combined Volkswagen’s engineering with subtle references to one of Britain’s most legendary rock bands. It features unique badging, color-coded bumpers and mirrors, specially designed upholstery inspired by the 1994 European leg of the Division Bell Tour, and a premium sound system carrying the band’s insignia.

This particular example carries a personal connection to the band, noted the release. Offered directly from Mason’s own collection, it is one of the only Pink Floyd Edition Golfs ever owned by a member of the group. Mason, a renowned car enthusiast and accomplished racer, acquired the car several years ago as a restoration project. Though the work was never completed, it is accompanied by an extensive selection of parts, offering an ideal opportunity for a Volkswagen enthusiast or Pink Floyd devotee to restore it with added provenance and purpose, and is offered without reserve, officials said.

The Golf is also being offered with a collection of signed memorabilia from Mason, including:

Mason has also personally signed the car, with photographic proof included. All proceeds from the sale, including Iconic Auctioneers’ premium, will benefit the Harefield Healing Garden. Located within the grounds of Harefield Hospital, the Garden provides a tranquil green space for patients, families and staff at one of the UK’s leading heart and lung centers.

“The Garden is particularly important to our family, as both a family member, as well as two close friends, have been patients at Harefield,” Mason said. “Supporting the garden represents a small gesture of thanks that can be of benefit to patients, visitors and staff.”

The 1961 Volkswagen Double Door Deluxe

The 1961 Volkswagen Double Door Deluxe, an exceptional example of Volkswagen’s legendary “Samba” bus, has undergone a comprehensive restoration costing around $132,000. Originally supplied to Sweden, this 23-window Samba has been finished in an elegant combination of Sand Green and Palm Green, with re-chromed original fittings and a retrimmed interior.

The restoration included a Prosser-built 1776 engine, upgraded CSP disc brakes and numerous improvements for performance and reliability. Donated by a long-standing supporter of charity auctions, the Samba will be sold without reserve, with all funds going directly to Great Ormond Street Hospital to help provide care for seriously ill children.

The Iconic Automobilia Sale

Two pieces of sporting memorabilia will be featured in the Iconic Automobilia Sale. The first is a rear wing end plate from Sebastian Vettel’s 2012 Red Bull-Renault RB8, used during the Spanish Grand Prix. Donated by Oracle Red Bull Racing to the family of team member Jon Devereux, who tragically passed away from sudden adult death syndrome, this lot will raise funds for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). The piece comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and represents a rare chance to own a part of a championship-winning car while supporting an important cause.

The second item is a pair of white Pro-Box boxing gloves, with each glove personally signed by the legendary British heavyweight Frank Bruno MBE. The gloves are being offered by Lewis Williams, a highly accomplished British professional boxer. Lewis is a supporter of The Myton Hospices and is donating this lot to raise vital funds for the charity, which provides specialist end-of-life care and support to patients and their families in Warwickshire.

Charity Lots Are a Force for Good

Rob Hubbard, managing director and principal auctioneer of Iconic Auctioneers, said, “We’re honored to be entrusted with these meaningful charity lots. They all carry powerful personal stories that resonate far beyond the collector car world, demonstrating how auctions and a passion for motoring can be a force for good.”

Nick Mason’s Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet Mk III Pink Floyd Edition and the Volkswagen Double Door Deluxe will be offered in Iconic Auctioneers’ Collectors’ Car Sale, while the Red Bull rear wing end plate and boxing gloves will feature in the Iconic Automobilia Sale. Both take place on Nov. 8 as part of the NEC Classic Motor Show, now in its 14th year of partnership with Iconic Auctioneers.

Alongside the charity lots, the event will feature a wide range of classic, modern and collectors’ cars and motorcycles, with live bidding available on-site, via the phone or commission bid, as well as online via the Iconic Auctioneers website.
