The Motor State Challenge, scheduled for July 20-22, is hosted annually in southwest Michigan and northern Indiana and draws drivers from across the US and Canada, Motor State representative said. Since its debut in 2009, the pro-touring event draws nearly 100 participants, driving everything from classic muscle cars to modern sports cars, as well as 1960s and 1970s era C10 and F100 trucks, the distributor said.
Many aspects of today’s event remain virtually unchanged from the early days of the Motor State Challenge, the company said, although it is now broken up across multiple classes: Vintage (1988 and before), Late Model (1989 and later), Manufacturer Vintage, Manufacturer Late Model, and Touring. In 2020, Motor State added the QA1 #goDRIVEit class, intended to get back to the roots of the event when participants often raced their daily drivers at informal weekend events, driving their vehicles to the track, racing them, then driving them home, organizers said.
Ahead of this year’s edition, Motor State Distributing representatives provided a glimpse at the three-day event’s schedule, with festivities kicking-off on July 20 with a police-escorted cruise through southwest Michigan.
On July 21, participants will compete in the road course event at GingerMan Raceway, a 2.14-mile road course featuring long straightaways, sweeping curves and tight apexes, and changing elevations for a day of timed laps, competing within closely matched groups.
For Saturday’s Autocross event, drivers will head to Tire Rack in South Bend, Indiana, where they sprint through the test track, competing for quickest time without any errors, organizers said. The event wraps up with an awards ceremony, where the top competitors in each category are awarded trophies and a place on the Motor State Challenge website wall of champions.
