With the delivery of its first customer Bronco EV Edition, Kindred Motorworks has introduced the Grayback Electric Vehicle Platform (EVP). The Grayback EVP is available exclusively in Kindred Motorworks’ electric-vehicle lineup. It is the product of a five-year, multimillion-dollar, OEM-level in-house development program undertaken by Kindred’s engineering team, company officials stated in a press release.
Named after the USS Grayback (SSG-574), a US Navy guided missile submarine built at Mare Island, where Kindred Motorworks is headquartered, the Grayback EVP allows Kindred to integrate sophisticated electric powertrains into virtually any vintage car or truck, noted the release. Combining the best off-the-shelf components with in-house controls and new Kindred Motorworks parts, the Grayback EVP manages heating, cooling, battery management, vehicle controls, power distribution, battery boxes and the car’s charging system. The company claims that it is unquestionably the world’s most advanced EV powertrain platform for vehicle conversions.
“The customer interest in our lineup of EV prototypes has been off the charts,” said Rob Howard, founder and CEO of Kindred Motorworks. “We knew we had to develop an electric-vehicle platform that exceeded their lofty expectations, and after five years of focused research and development, our engineering team has delivered exactly that with the Grayback EVP. This is the best-in-class platform for converting classic vehicles to EV propulsion, and the Kindred EV Bronco is the perfect launch vehicle to showcase the system’s reliability and usability.”
Multiple Motor Configurations Allow All Types of Vehicles to Be Converted to an EV
Kindred Motorworks’ modular battery design, built around a high-energy-density battery module, is the core of the Grayback EVP, providing the flexibility required to adapt the system to different classic vehicles’ unique packaging constraints. Multiple motor configurations are supported, allowing for an ideal match regardless of the vehicle being converted. From all-wheel-drive capability to high-performance road driving, the Grayback EVP delivers the desired experience safely and comfortably, officials said.
Kindred’s thermal management system optimizes the operating temperatures for the high-voltage battery, motor and inverters to ensure peak performance while optimizing component life. It’s also responsible for delivering efficient cabin heating and air conditioning.
Maintenance-Free Operation With 200 Mile Range & Up to 600 Horsepower
Kindred Motorworks says that its EVs equipped with the Grayback EVP deliver reliable, maintenance-free operation with 200 miles of driving range and up to 600 horsepower. The system is designed with serviceability in mind and can be upgraded over time, giving customers the flexibility to benefit from emerging battery technologies as they enter the marketplace.
The integrated charging system supports at-home charging, as well as CCS DC fast charging. Intelligent monitoring of battery and environmental conditions ensures the fastest possible charging experience in either scenario.
