Could Side Cameras Take the Place of Side Mirrors?

Recently, automakers have been seeking changes to laws prohibiting side cameras replacing side mirrors on vehicles to no avail.

But now, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced that it would investigate “driving behavior and lane change maneuver execution” in cars with traditional mirrors and cars with camera systems.

In order to determine the viability of camera systems, the NHTSA will test various characteristics of camera systems, including glare, responsiveness and effectiveness, opening the door for a potential law change a few years down the road.
