According to a new report from Road & Track, California has passed Senate Bill 961, requiring all new vehicles in California to have passive speed limiters by 2030.
Essentially the passive limiter system is intended to warn drivers when they are speeding more than 10 mph over the speed limit. Warnings will come in the form of both audible and visual signals, with only emergency vehicles being exempt from the requirement.
The passive intelligent speed assistance systems will be expected to use GPS software to compare location with a speed limit database to determine if a driver is speeding.
The bill must now pass the assembly, but according to reports many believe the requirements will be implemented to help combat the nationwide rise in traffic deaths.
