AMSOIL racing driver Scott Birdsall and his 1991 purpose-built Toyota Tacoma have broken the Blown Modified Mini-Pickup (BMMP) land-speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats. The record was broken during Bonneville Speed Week on Aug. 5. Watch the takeoff video of the Toyota here.
The 1991 Toyota pickup utilizes a 2JZ-GTE built engine that develops over 1,300 hp thanks to methanol fueling and an 88mm Garrett turbocharger. The build features a sequential style transmission and AMSOIL DOMINATOR and Severe Gear oils & fluids. In just over a month of work, the team had converted the old landscaping truck into the “Landspeedscaping” Toyota.

Birdsall, the owner of Chuckle’s Garage & Resolute Motorsports, is a trained fabricator and builder by trade. He is best known for his 1949 Ford F-1 “Old Smokey” truck, which had become a staple at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb over the past five years. An Instagram post from Birdsall confirmed the record and included video of the Toyota taking off.
The previous 3.0L truck record at Bonneville had stood at 189 mph, Birdsall and the Toyota were able to reach over 228 mph during the successful run according to on-board data. The official record as presented by Bonneville noted the new record at 204mph. The record came just one day after Birdsall had obtained his official Bonneville license.
