Volkswagen Says Goodbye to the Beetle with Short Film

Volkswagen built the last ever Beetle in July, ending a 70-year run that made the plucky little car one of the most culturally significant and influential vehicles of all time.

While production of the iconic, original, air-cooled design came to a close in 2003, Volkswagen carried on with a new iteration of the vehicle, this time with front-wheel drive, built on the Golf platform. The compact car was again revamped for the 2012 model year, this time sharing a platform with the Jetta, and remained under production until this summer.

In an attempt to say goodbye to a staple of its lineup, the German manufacturer produced a short animated film, which was broadcast live during coverage of New Year’s Eve celebrations in New York City.
