New aftermarket products capture awards

The New Products Showcase Awards, held at the 2012 SEMA Show, recognized the most cutting-edge automotive products on the market. More than 2,000 new products were submitted this year for Showcase Award consideration; each product was judged for “superior innovation, technical achievement, quality and workmanship, and consumer appeal and marketability.”

Husky Liners took honors in the Best New Exterior Accessory category for its 5th Wheel Tailgate with Optional Back-Up Camera Mount. Half the weight of factory tailgates, the truck product is designed to help increase gas mileage. The tailgate is also easy to install, uses all of the factory hinges and latch points, and provide easy open/close with a center-locking latch.

Intraphex netted the Mobile Electronics award for its Smartphone Integration Device. The 100% plug-and-play unit offers universal video and audio mirroring that is able to redisplay a smartphone’s HDMI ((High-Definition Multimedia Interface) output signal onto virtually any in-vehicle screen. The video and audio seamlessly mirror to the secondary screen and/or audio system while all the original video and input is still being viewed and controlled through the host device’s touch-screen input.

Also in the Mobile Electronics category: Brandmotion’s Loft Lite interior vehicle lighting system grabbed runner-up honors. Loft Lite is a small, easy-to-install, flush-mounted housing that uses LEDs to illuminate vehicle interiors. The focused LED surrounded by rounded bezels requires less than 1/5th the power of an incandescent lamp and provides steady light regardless of voltage. The lights can be mounted over each seat in a vehicle to give passengers personalized lighting suitable for reading, eating, etc.

Taking top honors in the Merchandising Display category, Extang/Truxedo/UnderCover unveiled the UnderCover Flex, a folding tonneau that combines the security of a hard-locking cover with the convenience of a soft cover. Runner-Up honors in the Merchandising Display category went to AMP Research for its PowerStep POP and Extang/Truxedo/UnderCover for the UnderCover SwingCase.

Mickey Thompson Performance Tires and Wheels’ Street Comp acquired a runner-up position in the Best New Tire and Related Product category. The Street Comp is available in 18 sizes and integrates Mickey Thomson’s racecar technology into a tire for great performance, handling and ride comfort.

BedRug Inc. won honors for its BedRug and BedTred for Jeep in the Offroad/4-Wheel Drive Product category. The BedTred provides a rugged spray-in look, insulates from noise and heat, and is 100% waterproof. The BedRug looks and feels like carpet, is easy to install and remove, and insulates from noise and heat.

Curt Mfg. won Best New Product for Vans, Pickups and Sport Utility Vehicles with its Easy Mount Electrical Brackets, a simplified solution to mounting tow wiring to a vehicle. Easy-mount brackets rest over the receiver tube and tighten with two bolts; then the tow wiring sock snaps or screws into the bracket with no drilling required.

Additionally, Bak Industries’ Roll-X Aluminum Roll Up Cover won the Light Truck Accessory Alliance’s (LTAA) Best New Product Over $500. With no-drill, clamp-on installation, the cover rolls up on top of rails with one-hand operation. The aluminum top laminated with vinyl requires no tension adjustment or canister and allows full access to stake pockets.

In other award news, Mickey Thompson’s new Baja ATZP3 received a 2012 SEMA Global Media Award, which recognizes specialty equipment manufacturers that have mass appeal to consumers. Slated for availability in the first quarter of 2013, the Baja ATZP3 was developed to be a next-generation all-terrain tire with offroad traction, a quieter ride and superior durability for today’s light trucks and 4x4s.

Roadwire, a leading supplier of OEM and aftermarket leather interiors, received the 2012 Mitsubishi Diamond Quality Supplier Award. Presented by Mitsubishi Motors North America, the award was a tribute to Roadwire’s total vendor performance in five key areas: product development, procurement and parts support, warranty, marketing and vendor performance and shipping.
