Lakeshore High Wins Div. 8 Hot Rod Challenge

Jun 18, 2010

Motor State Distributing hosted the Division 8 Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge championship at its Lane Automotive’s 23rd Annual Car Show. The show provided an ideal backdrop to determine the final high school auto tech team to advance to the “Showdown at SEMA” Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge National Championship.

Team PAINLESS Performance-Lakeshore High School from Stevensville, Mich., won the event with a time of 53 minutes and 27 seconds, and will represent Division 8 at the national championship build-off at the SEMA Show in November, according to a press release.

There, it will compete against Team ARP-East Ridge High School (Div. 2), Chattanooga, Tenn.; Team PRW-Fremd High School (Div. 3), Palatine, Ill.; Team Edelbrock-North Orange County ROP (Div. 7), Anaheim, Calif.; Team MSD-Eastern Oklahoma County Tech Center (Div. 4), Choctaw, Okla.; and the wildcard Team Auto Meter-Loara High School (Div. 7), Anaheim CA.

A total of seven high school auto tech teams participated in the Div. 8 challenge. The teams are made up of invited auto technology classes from local high schools, consisting of five students and an instructor/coach. Ohio Technological College gave out scholarships to the participants.

The event resembles the tear down between rounds at a drag race. The engines are identically prepared small-block Chevys. Students must properly disassemble the engine using only hand tools, utilizing proper de-torque and disassembly procedure, and then rebuild it. Results are based on overall time plus penalties to determine the winner.
