The Engine Pro Sprints on Dirt presented by ARP event was packed with surprises July 18 as Tony Stewart made his long-awaited comeback to sprint racing.
It was his first sprint car race since breaking his right leg in a crash on Aug. 5, 2013, at Southern Iowa Speedway.
Stewart’s participation in the event, held at Tri-City Motor Speedway in Auburn, Mich., was a surprise to race fans as the veteran driver was a last-minute entry. Even Stewart’s win was a surprise-to him.
While pulling into victory lane, Stewart actually thought he had finished second. He then learned that he had inherited the lead after Dustin Daggett drove off the backstretch.
“It’s been eleven-and-a-half months since I’ve been (in a sprint car), and I really missed it,” said Stewart in victory lane.
The following night, Stewart finished third in an Engine Pro Sprints on Dirt race at Crystal (Mich.) Motor Speedway.
