The Body Kits Market

Apr 4, 2011

Yearly OEM model changes present challenges and opportunities to restylers and accessory manufacturers in the body kit aftermarket. New vehicle offerings, consumer trends, media, popular culture and new technologies also influence this aftermarket segment.

  • New styles of automobiles are often paired with pop culture trends reflected in the media, entertainment and driving behavior.
  • Accessory body kits must have a broad market appeal for vehicles that fit the aftermarket.
  • There is a thin line between the OEM look and aftermarket customizing. Parts have to look like they are factory spec, while on the other hand, car owners are looking for an image that the factory isn’t providing.
  • Pre-painted accessories have significantly decreased the cost to the restyler.
  • Older buyers focus on the muscle car; younger buyers focus on the smaller car.
  • American muscle cars (Mustang, Camaro, Challenger) are stimulating the body kit market. Owners want the car to look good; the car rivalry is helping the body kit business. The trend in these domestic vehicles is toward V8s with high-horsepower but decent-mileage and aerodynamic kits for such late-model muscle cars are in high demand. Making the car more aerodynamic will reduce drag; use less fuel.

However overall automotive sales trend toward an expansion of the smaller-car, hybrid and electric car segment driven by a green-conscience buying public:

  • Chevy Cobalt, Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Honda CRZ, Honda Fit, Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Mitsubishi EVO, Nissan Versa, Scion tC, Scion xB, Subaru STI, Toyota Corolla, Toyota FT-86, Toyota Yaris, Volkswagen GTI
  • There is also a growing interest in aerodynamic and body kits for these smaller models.
  • These smaller vehicles present a different opportunity for body kits and accessories because they offer entry- and mid-trim models that don’t include options. Trends indicate less interest in complete body kits and more interest in accessories that are functional and accessories that improve fuel efficiency such as aerodynamic kits.
  • Aerodynamic body kits rely heavily on existing body components, attachment systems, clips and holes. Aerodynamic kits need to fit with a minimum amount of alteration to the vehicle if they’re going to have a wide appeal.
